October 1976 Big Canoe Chapel Board of Trustees established with Sam Rothermel serving as Chairman
Prior to 1977 Small groups of residents meet for worship at the Canoe Lodge, Swim Club, and Treetoppers 101, 126, and #129
June 1976 Chapel incorporated
June 1976 Dr. Vernon Broyles becomes first Chaplain
July 1977 Chapel construction begins
August 1977 Tom Cousins of Cousins Properties, a charter member of the Chapel and the original developer of Big Canoe, presented the deed to members of the Big Canoe Chapel.
December 1977 First worship service held in the Chapel on Christmas Eve, co-led by Dr. Vernon Broyles and Sam Rothermel.
January 1982 First “informal” library with books spread out in bride’s room
May 1982 First annual scholarship awards announced
April 1984 First performance of Chapel choir – Margaret Chester directed
January 1984 Rev. Wayne Smith becomes volunteer part-time Associate Chaplain
October 1984 Big Canoe Chapel Cemetery is dedicated
May 1987 Dr. Albert G. Harris becomes Chaplain for Pastoral Care
January 1988 Women's Guild is formed from an informal Bible Study group meeting in the homes
June 1988 Chapel expansion begins
December 1988 Chapel enlargement completed for Christmas Eve service
February 1989 Broyles Community Center Construction begins
May 1989 First year for the Women's Guild Big Canoe Tour of Homes
September 1989 Big Canoe Co. donates 11 acres to Chapel for what would become Meditation Park
November 1989 Broyles Community Center dedication
November 1989 First community event is held – Hospital Art PaintFest
November 1989 Chapel Time Capsule sealed and buried (Nov. 19)
February 1990 First Dr. Vernon Broyles Mission Conference
February 1992 Dr. Vernon Broyles passes away
March 1992 Dr. Jimmy Allen becomes Senior Chaplain
May 1994 Robert B. Platt Botanical Garden donated to the Chapel
May 1994 Bell Tower construction completed
September 1996 Men’s Chorus first performance – Lamar Helms directed
August 1997 Broyles Community Center expansion starts
June 1998 Broyles Community Center expansion is completed
February 1998 Rev. Phill Ellington becomes Associate Chaplain
July 1998 Eloise Broyles donated her Steinway grand piano

Elizabeth Bloodworth Memorial Library dedication
October 1998 Choir Director Margaret Chester passed away
December 1998 Lamar Helms becomes Choir Director
October 1999 Hand bell choir formed in memory of Margaret Chester
December 2000 Terraces and Scout Hut are completed in Meditation Park
December 2002 Dr. Jimmy Allen retires as Senior Chaplain
February 2003 Meditation Park renamed Dr. Jimmy Allen Meditation Park
January 2003 Dr. Jim McCormick serves as interim Chaplain
July 2003 Dr. Jim McCormick becomes Senior Chaplain
June 2004 Rev. Wayne Smith passes away
August 2004 Rev. Phill Ellington retires as Associate Chaplain
August 2004 Rev. Lamar Helms becomes Associate Chaplain
March 2006 Allen pipe organ installed
March 2007 New Chapel bell tower logo is first used
June 2007 Hand Bell Choir formed under the direction of Ann Montgomery
